Did you know that today, February 23, 2018, is International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day? Did you even know there was such a thing? Well, now you know and how can you NOT celebrate this day with your favorite canine companion? I mean really…. It’s sort of like Valentine’s day for dogs.
Did you know that dog biscuits were invented by an American manufacturer named James Spratt? He invented dog biscuits and different kinds of dog food too. I’m sure all dogs love him.
I’m going to celebrate this very special day by eating some of my most favorite biscuits… and I’m thinking that my human might let me have some extra ones to mark this very special day. Plus, I’m also gonna share the love with my fellow canines by sharing with all of you the recipe for my MOST FAVORITE dog biscuits.
FINLEY’S FAVORITE BISCUITS
I LOVE these peanut butter nuggets because they are so tasty and they’re small, which means we can more easily coax our humans into giving us extra! Here’s the recipe:
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1/4 cup dry milk
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons unsulphured blackstrap molasses
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
- Place all the ingredients in your bread maker in the order that your machine requires.
- Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.
- When the dough is ready, remove it and divide it into 3 pieces.
- Roll each chunk of dough into a sheet that is ¼” thick.
- Using an apple corer, press the corer hard onto the sheet of dough. This will make an indentation, but won’t cut all the way through the dough. I just take a sharp knife and go over the indentations to cut the pieces. You will end up with shapes like the dog biscuits in the picture and a small circle that is in the middle.
- Place the dog treats on a lightly greased baking sheet.
- Bake the treats at 300 degrees F for 45-60 minutes. Check them often to make sure that they don’t get too brown.
- Turn off the oven and let the dog biscuits dry in the oven overnight until they are hard and crisp.
What’s fun about these is that you can make them in lots of fun shapes! I hope you…well, your favorite canine, will love these as much as I do.
