Finley’s Tips on Traveling with Pets

Hi All,

Finley here! I hope this brand new year is off to a great start for all of you! I know I’m having a great year so far.  Of course, I get to hang out all day at Cascade Kennels and play with my friends so of course it’s been a great year so far! I’m excited to be penning my very first blog for this new year, 2019. When I was “discussing” with my human, what I should write about, we decided it would be a great idea to offer some tips on making plans with your pets…… specifically plans for when you travel with your pets. I’m not sure if I’ve ever written about this before because, well, most of the times when humans travel, they bring their pets here, to Cascade Kennels.  However, sometimes humans like to take us along and when they do, there are some things every human should know when it comes to traveling with pets.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH PETS

I guess there’s more than one way for humans to travel, from what my human says. Sometimes humans travel in their cars and other times they travel on big planes that fly in the air or big buses or trains! If you’re taking your pet with you on a train or bus or plane, it’s important to FIRST find out if you even CAN take your pet. If so, then the airline, bus or train will have certain rules for you to follow.  I for one would be a little nervous going on a plane, train or bus so I think it’s a good idea to help your pet fall asleep so they won’t be scared.

Now, if you’re going to be traveling in the car and want to take your pet with you, here are some good tips to follow to make sure everyone has a safe trip.

  • Make sure that where ever you’re going, it’s OK to bring your pet.
  • Make sure they have their ID tag on and all the information is correct.
  • It’s a good idea to do a practice run first, especially if your pet has never traveled, (like a puppy) or you’re going for a long time.
  • Make sure you have a really safe and comfortable crate for your pet. You know, we don’t always understand things like you humans do and sometimes we get scared, so if we’re in a crate we won’t try and jump out or jump in your lap. Apparently, that would be bad!
  • Make sure you bring plenty of water and food for us…. We like our travel treats.
  • Also, remember that we need potty breaks. It helps us feel better and we can stretch our legs.

Well, I hope you find these tips very helpful and that you’ll remember to follow these when you plan to take your pet on your next trip.   (source: thanks to my friends at PetMD for helping with my research)

Until next time,

Finley
