Two Critical Factors in Feeding:
Portion Control and Body Condition
Determining how much to feed your dog comes down to your portion control and his body condition, according to nutritionist Joseph Wakshlag, DVM, Ph.D., at Cornell Universit Vet School.
For portion control: “A good recommendation is to go with the low end of the feeding directions on the bag,” he says.
For body condition: “I use the hand rule to measure the dog’s condition. If you press your palms together, that same sort of fleshy feel on the palm of your hands, where you can’t feel any bones, is similar to what an overweight dog would feel like. Now, take your fingers and rub them across the back of your other open hand. That’s about how a dog’s ribs should feel if that dog is in good condition — some bones with nice flesh filling in around those bones.
“Finally, make a fist with one hand and feel the knuckles of the clenched hand with your fingers. It’s like feeling a series of sticks with no flesh between the individual fingers. If a dog’s ribs feel equally prominent, that dog is likely underweight.”
To accurately measure food for all dogs other than toy breeds, use an 8-ounce cup. For toy breeds, use a kitchen scale to measure the food in grams, Dr. Wakshalg says. “One cup of food can weigh between 70 and 120 grams, depending on the size and density, so you have to be careful if you switch between brands.”

Employee SpotlightJames joined us in March of 2015. James’ prior experience includes being a volunteer caregiver and medical observer at Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina, as well as over a year of daycare experience. He says the most enjoyable part of working with dogs is watching and helping them grow and integrate socially with each other. James brings a calm yet assertive energy to playtime, which is great for our wonderfully boisterous pack in daycare. He currently owns a Golden Retriever/German Shepherd mix named Gamf, who often accompanies him to work. In his spare time, James hikes, writes fiction, takes spontaneous road trips, runs cross country and reads science.
