Unsung

Heroes: Facts about the Dogs Behind the Man

Behind most of our everyday heroes there are  four legged friends. They ask for no reward and get little recognition, but without them everyday jobs would be hard for a person alone.

We would like to show our appreciation for a job well done by the many working dogs who help better our lives every day by sharing some fun facts about them with you.

Did you know:

  • Canines with high “toy drive” are used for urban search and rescue. It is a game of “hide and seek” for the dog. In training, people run from the dog and hide with the toy, playing with the dog when found. By the time the dog is on a real search, he is looking willingly for trapped survivors.
  • A search dog has 44 times more olfactory sensory cells than a human. He’s a super sniffer.

Few search dogs wear “booties” when working on a rubble pile. Despite the hazards of sharp metal and broken glass, the dogs often need to perform what is

  • called a “soft walk” where they splay their paws for maximum traction. Collars and booties can actually add to the canine’s risk of injury when searching in tight or obstructed spaces.
  • Search and Rescue dog training begins as games played while puppies.
  • Some rescued dogs can smell a human up to 1/4 mile away.
  • Some dogs have shown the remarkable ability to detect certain cancers with their sniffers.
  • Dogs are used to sniff out anything from mines and explosives to termites and bed bugs.
  • Conservationists have used dogs to find bumblebee hives in orders to protect endangered species.
