Finley’s Tips for a Happy 4th of July

Hello all!

Have a Safe 4th of July
Have a Safe 4th of July

Did you know that, according to www.petamberalert.com, the number of pets lost in the US increases by 30% between the 4th and 6th of July? I’m here to give you plenty of pointers for keeping your dog from being part of that sad statistic this year. These are the things my parents do to keep me safe!

The first step towards keeping your dog safe on the 4th is to safely confine them for the festivities. I know the party isn’t complete without me there, but my owners assure me that they keep me in a bedroom or cozy crate for the evening for my own good. Luckily, they do lots of things to distract me from all the noise outside! On top of closing the windows and turning the TV or some music on, they also give me a steady stream of frozen treats, puzzle toys and bones to keep my mind off the fireworks.

My family sure does a lot to prepare for this day, and I’m not just talking about setting up for the barbecue! They always take a picture of me so that if I did wriggle away from them, they have a recent picture of me to show people. They also make sure I’m wearing a collar with an up-to-date ID tag, and that my microchip information is all current. If your dog doesn’t already have a microchip, get one! It’s only $20 at Homeward Pet on Tuesdays from 10am – 2pm, no appointment needed.

In addition to these kinds of preparations, my humans and I also do a lot of fun exercise in the morning on that day. That gets me good and tired out by the time all the excitement for everyone else starts up. What also helps me is that my family makes a point of acting calmly and confidently around me. Sometimes when I get really nervous, it makes it worse if my owners start acting like something is wrong too by being really clingy.

What my mom and dad say is that when it comes to the 4th of July, it’s just better to be safe than sorry. Missing out on one sunny barbecue isn’t half as bad as getting lost or hurt. I sure hope these tips help, and wish you a fantastic holiday this year!
