Flea Season is Coming

Depending on the climate, fleas may be a seasonal or year-round problem. While you may have enjoyed the mild weather this winter, the flea population did too! As a result, we are expecting more flea problems than usual this year. Adult fleas spend much of their time on our pets – or in some cases, us. However, most of their life is spent on the carpet, floors, and furniture of our homes, or outdoors in the soil, in backyards, and dog parks. Female fleas produce up to 50 eggs each day, which can then fall from your pet wherever they go. These eggs hatch into tiny larva which can stay dormant in a pre-adult stage for months, depending on the surrounding temperature and humidity. They then emerge as adults – ready to re-infest your pet. A mild flea infestation can be very hard to spot. Fleas move fast and know where to hide. At first, you may only notice discomfort or excessive scratching. You might also notice small, black flea droppings in their coat. Some pets can develop an allergic reaction to flea bites, and the scratching can lead to sores or infections. You can search for fleas with a metal flea comb, which can be purchased at any pet store. Many different remedies exist for combating fleas, but it is important to treat both your pet and its general environment. First, it is important to frequently wash your pet’s bedding and thoroughly vacuum furniture, carpets and other flooring. For more information on fleas and their eradication, please contact your veterinarian.
